What Is Samudra Manthan?
Samudra Manthan means “churning of the ocean.” It is a famous event mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures like the Puranas. In this event, the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) worked together to churn the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality.
Why Was Samudra Manthan Held?
The Devas had become weak after losing their divine energy due to a curse. To regain their strength and immortality, they needed Amrit.
On the advice of Lord Vishnu, the Devas agreed to churn the ocean with the help of the Asuras, promising to share the results.
How Was Samudra Manthan Done?
To churn the ocean, divine tools were used:
- Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod
- Vasuki, the serpent king, was used as the rope
- Devas held the tail of Vasuki
- Asuras held the head of Vasuki
When Mount Mandara began sinking, Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma Avatar and supported the mountain on His back so the churning could continue.
